Root or Stem?
So, tell me if this has ever happened to you.
The other day, I was throwing together a quick salad—chopping up cucumbers, tomatoes, and, naturally, some carrots. Mid-slice, I paused and thought, “Wait… is a carrot a root or a stem?” 😂
Like, shouldn’t we know this already? I swear we covered this in school... right? But honestly, I had no idea. So I did what any confused adult would do—I Googled it. (Okay, and fell into a minor vegetable anatomy rabbit hole.)
Here’s what I found—and I promise it’s more interesting than you’d think!

Let's Keep It Simple

You know how some plants grow above the soil and some parts grow below? Carrots grow underground, right? And when a plant part grows underground and stores nutrients, it's usually a root. More specifically, carrots are called "taproots."
That means they grow straight down from the base of the plant and are the main root structure. So yes—a carrot is 100% a root, not a stem!

Wait… What's a Stem Then?

Okay, let's clear this up. A stem is the part of a plant that usually grows above ground. It supports the leaves, flowers, or fruits and helps transport water and nutrients through the plant. Think of celery or asparagus—those are stems. They're often long, green, and have leaves attached.
But with carrots, the green leafy part on top is the stem and leaves. The orange part we eat is the root storing all the good stuff the plant needs to survive.

What Makes Carrots Special?

Carrots are not just any root—they're storage roots. That's why they're so rich in nutrients, especially beta-carotene, which our bodies turn into vitamin A. This helps our eyesight, immune system, and skin. No wonder they're so good for us! 🧡
Also, fun fact: if you try planting just the top part of a carrot (with the leaves), it won't grow a new carrot underground. That's because the orange part you eat took months to grow as a root. What you can grow from the top is a little leafy plant—just don't expect another full carrot to appear.

So... Root or Stem?

Definitely a root! 🌱 And now you know the next time someone brings it up at a picnic or during a cooking session. You'll sound super smart!

Your Turn!

Did you already know carrots were roots? Or were you today years old like me when you found out? 😂 Drop a comment and tell me if you've ever had one of those "wait, what even is this?" food moments. Let's swap some random plant facts! 🥦🥒
