Drive Smart, Stay Safe
Hello, Lykkers!
Every time you get behind the wheel, you're making choices that could mean the difference between arriving safely and becoming a statistic.
The good news? Defensive driving saves time, money and lives, and mastering seven simple habits can turn anyone into a safer driver.

Avoid Driving Drowsy

The National Highway Safety Administration estimates that in 2017, 91,000 police reported crashes involved drowsy drivers, which is 100 per cent preventable: get some sleep before hitting the road. Think about it: when you're tired, your reaction time slows dramatically, your focus wavers, and you might even experience microsleeps without realizing it.
If you're feeling sleepy, pull over at a safe location and take a proper break. No appointment or deadline is worth the risk of nodding off at the wheel.

Stop Texting and Driving

Stop texting and driving, period. Distracted driving is dangerous, claiming 3142 lives in 2020. Every time you glance at your phone, you're taking your eyes off the road for seconds that could change everything. Put your phone on silent, stash it in the glove compartment, or activate "Do Not Disturb" mode before you start driving. That text message can wait. Your life cannot.

Wear Your Seatbelt

Seat belts save lives. One of the safest choices drivers and passengers make is to buckle up. Seatbelts make airbags more effective and prevent you from being thrown from the vehicle. It takes just two seconds to click that belt into place, yet those two seconds could be what saves your life in a crash. Make it a non-negotiable rule: everyone buckles up before the car moves, every single time.

Drive Slower

Speeding puts everyone on the road in danger. In 2019, speeding killed 9,478 people. Keep within the speed limits and get there safely. The faster you drive, the more severe your crash is likely to be. Speed limits exist for a reason. They're calculated based on road conditions, visibility, and traffic patterns. Sure, you might save a few minutes by going faster, but is arriving three minutes earlier really worth the exponentially increased risk? Slow down and enjoy the drive.

Eliminate Impaired Driving

With all the transportation options now available, there is never an excuse to drive under the influence of drugs or something similar. Don't forget to designate a driver when you're out having refreshments, or call a friend, grab an Uber, or walk with a buddy. Impairment affects your judgment, coordination, and reaction time. Plan ahead. If you know you'll be consuming something that affects your ability to drive safely, arrange alternative transportation before you even leave home.

Use Your Turn Signal

Turn signal neglect in the United States causes about 2 million crashes per year. The Traffic Safety community understands that turn signal neglect actually accounts for more than twice the collisions as distracted driving does. This tiny flick of your finger communicates your intentions to every driver around you. Failing to signal doesn't just frustrate other drivers; it creates genuine danger. Signal early, signal consistently, and give others the information they need to make safe decisions.

Keep Distance Behind Trucks

Truck drivers cannot see what's directly behind them, so it's a good idea to keep a 2-car distance between you and them, which allows enough time to react, if needed. Large trucks have massive blind spots. When you're tailgating a truck, the driver literally cannot see you. If that truck needs to brake suddenly or a tire blows out, you'll have no time to react. Give trucks plenty of space, both behind and to the sides.

Becoming a Driving Hero

Practice the seven safe driving habits above and buckle up every trip, every time, and become a hero to your family. These aren't complicated techniques that require special training. They're simple, conscious choices that anyone can make. The beautiful thing?
When you practice these habits consistently, they become second nature. You stop thinking about them and just do them automatically. That's when you've truly become a safer driver, protecting not just yourself, but everyone sharing the road with you. Drive smart, stay alert, and make every trip count.
