Gel Sunscreen Battle!
Good Day, Lykkers! I used to think all gel sunscreens were basically the same too—light, watery, a bit cooling, and that’s it. But after actually using two of the popular ones side by side, I realized texture-wise and skin-feel-wise… they can behave very differently once they hit the skin.
And honestly, this little “battle” surprised me more than I expected.

Isntree Hyaluronic Acid Watery Sun Gel

This was the one I originally thought was the “ultimate gel sunscreen.” The texture is light, but if I’m being really honest with my own experience, it leans slightly more creamy once you start spreading it. It still feels comfortable though. On my skin, it goes on smoothly and doesn’t leave that heavy sunscreen feeling I usually dislike. What I really appreciate is how rarely it irritates my skin. I can apply it on normal days and forget about it for hours, which is not something I can say for every sunscreen I’ve tried.

Etude Soon Jung Director’s Sunscreen

This one honestly caught me off guard. Texture-wise, it feels even more gel-like than Isntree. It spreads very easily and feels more watery and fresh when I first apply it. If I’m only talking about texture, this is the one that feels the most “true gel sunscreen” to me. It also gives a nice hydrating layer, almost like a light moisture boost on top of skincare. On paper, it sounds perfect—especially for sensitive skin since the Soon Jung line is usually known for that.
After trying both, I learned that “gel sunscreen” doesn’t automatically mean they feel or behave the same on every face. For me, Isntree is the safer, more dependable option—it may be slightly creamier, but my skin actually stays calm with it. Etude feels more gel-like and hydrating, but my skin just doesn’t fully agree with the formula. So now I’ve stopped choosing based only on texture and started choosing based on how my skin reacts long-term… which honestly saved me from a lot of unnecessary irritation.
