Fruity Lollipop Fun
Today, we’re making hawthorn and blueberry lollipops—a fruity snack that’s perfect for kids over one year old.
Lykkers, these lollipops are naturally sweet, fun to eat, and we can make them at home without the extra sugar found in store-bought versions. It’s a snack that’s both healthy and playful, and making it together can be a fun activity for us and the little ones.
What We’re Making
These lollipops combine the tartness of hawthorn, the sweetness of blueberries, and the mild flavor of apple. Yellow rock sugar adds a gentle sweetness, while the cornstarch helps the mixture hold together as lollipops. The final result is a chewy, fruity treat with a natural flavor that kids love.
Ingredients Needed
- Hawthorn: 500g (fresh or frozen)
- Blueberries: 100g (fresh or frozen)
- Apple: 1 medium
- Yellow rock sugar: 200g
- Water: 100g
- Cornstarch: 10g
- Optional: a small amount of oil for greasing hands/molds
Step 1: Prepare the Fruits
1. Soak hawthorn and blueberries in warm salted water for 5–10 minutes to clean and soften them.
2. Peel the apple if preferred (optional), then wash it thoroughly.
3. Set all prepared fruits aside.
Step 2: Remove Hawthorn Seeds
1. Carefully remove the seeds from each hawthorn fruit using a small kitchen tool or seed remover.
2. This ensures the lollipops will be smooth and safe for little ones.
Step 3: Cut the Apple
1. Cut the apple into small cubes (about 1–2 cm).
2. Keep the pieces uniform so they cook evenly with the hawthorn and blueberries.
Step 4: Cook the Fruit Mixture
1. Place the prepared hawthorn, blueberries, apple cubes, 200g rock sugar, and 100g water into a medium-sized pan.
2. Turn the heat to high and bring the mixture to a boil.
3. Reduce to low heat and simmer for 20 minutes, stirring occasionally, until the fruits are soft and tender.
Step 5: Blend into Smooth Puree
1. Transfer the cooked fruit mixture into a blender.
2. Blend on the vegetable/fruit juice setting for about 1–1.5 minutes until smooth.
3. No need to strain—the mixture should be fine and creamy.
Step 6: Thicken the Mixture
1. Pour the blended puree back into the pan.
2. Add 10g cornstarch and stir well to combine.
3. Cook over low heat, stirring constantly, until the mixture thickens and holds together like dough.
4. This step may take 10–15 minutes. Patience is important!
Step 7: Shape the Lollipops
1. Let the thickened mixture cool slightly so it’s safe to handle.
2. Put on gloves (PVC or disposable) and lightly grease your hands with oil.
3. Pinch off small portions about the size of a ping pong ball (roughly 20g each).
4. Press each portion into a lollipop mold to shape it.
5. Carefully remove from the mold and set aside.
Step 8: Dry or Bake (Optional)
1. To make firmer lollipops, place them in an air fryer, food dehydrator, or oven at 80℃ (176℉) for 1.5 hours.
2. Let them cool completely.
3. Insert sticks and wrap individually.
4. If a softer texture is fine, skip this step and wrap immediately after shaping.
Step 9: Enjoy Your Lollipops!
Lykkers, our hawthorn and blueberry lollipops are ready! Making them at home is fun, healthy, and rewarding. We get to control the sweetness and ensure natural ingredients while creating a treat kids love. They’re perfect for snack time, playdates, or little gifts.
Tips for the Best Lollipops
- Adjust sugar to taste: less for tangier, more for sweeter.
- Consistency matters: too thin? cook a little longer; too thick? add a splash of water.
- Shapes are fun: use molds for creative forms or keep them simple as round lollipops.
- Cool completely before inserting sticks to avoid breakage.
