Switzerland's Glacier Train
Hi, Friends! If trains had a beauty pageant, the Glacier Express in Switzerland would win the crown, the sash, and probably the talent portion too.
This legendary slow train (yes, it brags about being slow) rolls through the Swiss Alps like a moving postcard, connecting Zermatt and St. Moritz across nearly 180 miles of pure alpine drama.
Autumn is honestly the sweet spot for this ride because the mountains dress up in gold, orange, and red like they are heading to the fanciest party of the year.

What Is the Glacier Express?

Think of the Glacier Express as the world's most scenic commute that nobody actually needs to commute on. The full journey between Zermatt and St. Moritz takes about 8 hours, crossing 291 bridges, passing through 91 tunnels, and climbing over the Oberalp Pass at about 6,706 feet above sea level.
You are not just riding a train. You are riding through a highlight reel of Switzerland's greatest hits. The train runs year-round except for a short break in mid-autumn around the Oberalp Pass section, so timing your visit is important.

Tickets and Pricing

Ticket prices depend on your Swiss Travel Pass situation and which class you choose. A second-class seat reservation costs around $18 USD, while a first-class reservation runs about $32 USD. If you do not already have a Swiss Travel Pass, a full second-class ticket can range from roughly $150 to $200 USD depending on the season.
First class is worth considering because those panoramic windows are absolutely enormous, like sitting inside a giant snow globe. The Excellence Class, which is the premium dining experience, costs extra and needs to be booked well in advance because it sells out faster than concert tickets.

Choosing the Best Seats

Here is where it gets tactical, like picking your spot at a fireworks show. The train runs from Zermatt to St. Moritz and also in reverse. For the best views heading from Zermatt to St. Moritz, sit on the right side of the train (window seat on the right when facing forward). For the return journey, swap to the left side.
The most dramatic scenery comes around the Landwasser Viaduct section and the stretch near Chur, so you want an unobstructed window for those moments. Both first and second class have panoramic roof windows, but first class seats are wider and the windows feel even more like you are floating through the mountains.

The Most Stunning Sections Along the Route

The Landwasser Viaduct near Filisur is basically the Instagram superstar of the whole route. This curved stone viaduct sweeps dramatically into a tunnel carved right into a cliff face. It looks fake. It is not fake. Then there is the climb over Oberalp Pass, the highest point of the journey, where the landscape turns wild and wide open in a way that makes your heart do a little somersault.
The stretch through the Rhine Gorge, sometimes called the Swiss Grand Canyon, is another section where you should absolutely put your phone down and just stare. The rocky walls and rushing river below are the kind of scenery that makes you question every life choice that did not involve moving to Switzerland.

Autumn Tips for the Ride

Autumn turns the valleys into something out of a fairy tale. The larch trees in particular go bright golden yellow in the alpine areas, which contrasts magnificently against the grey granite peaks and early snow on the higher elevations. Pack a light layer because the train is climate-controlled but station stops can get chilly.
Bring snacks or book the dining car experience in advance since the on-board restaurant is charming but gets busy. The Panorama Car dining reservation is separate from your seat reservation, so sort that out early.

Getting There and Practical Info

Both Zermatt and St. Moritz are easily reachable by Swiss rail connections from Zurich or Geneva. The train departs once daily in each direction, so missing it means waiting until tomorrow, which is honestly not the worst excuse to spend an extra night in the Alps. The Swiss Travel Pass covers the base ticket but not the mandatory seat reservation fee.
Autumn on the Glacier Express is genuinely one of those experiences that sounds like a cliche until you are actually sitting there watching golden valleys float past your giant window with a hot drink in hand. Book your seat reservation early, choose your side wisely, and let Switzerland do the rest. You can thank us later!
